College notebook: Hockinson grad Porter 2nd in conference

Junior leads W. State Colorado’s cross country team

Georgia Porter placed second at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference cross country championships Saturday in Alamosa, Colo., leading Western State Colorado University to second place in the team standings behind host Adams State University.

“The women’s race was a fast one, with a pack of four Grizzlies and a pair of Mountaineers, Porter and Cali Antolini, all battling to push the pace in the first couple miles,” reports gomountaineers.com.

Porter ran the 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) course in 21 minutes, 18.7 seconds, garnering All-RMAC honors. Prandoni won in 20:43.7.

Women’s soccer

CCC honors Carter

Carroll College junior goalkeeper Jamie Carter was named Cascade Collegiate Conference Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week. The Camas High School graduate recorded back-to-back road shutouts at Southern Oregon and Oregon Tech as the Saints (12-4-1, 9-1-1 CCC) clinched the conference regular season championship.

Carter has recorded nine shutouts and allowed seven goals in 16 games, with a goals against average of 0.43 and a save percentage of 88.5.

Cross country

Guenther leads WWU to second at GNACs

Western Washington senior Taylor Guenther finished sixth at the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Championships held Saturday at East Lake Padden Park in Bellingham, leading the Viking women to second place.

The Prairie High School graduate ran the 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) course in 22 minutes, 1.50 seconds.

WWU junior Sara Taferre, a Skyview High School graduate, finished 23rd in 22:57.20 as the team’s fourth runner.

Alaska Anchorage won the team title with 39 points. WWU was second with 71 points.

• Seattle Pacific University senior Lynelle Decker finished 36th in 23:11.30. The Mountain View High School graduate was the team’s fifth runner as the Falcons placed fifth.

Volleyball

Van Valey takes part in ‘GNAC Insider’ podcast

Northwest Nazarene University senior outside hitter Taylor Van Valey is one of the guests on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference’s “GNAC Insider” podcast that first aired Tuesday.

The Hockinson High School graduate speaks about the (team’s recent) road victory over Western Washington, why she chose to attend Northwest Nazarene as a Washington native, playing six of eight games at home and being a dual athlete as a track and field thrower,” the GNAC website states.

The podcast is available through gnacsports.com.

Men’s golf

GNAC honors Johnson

Western Washington junior Brett Johnson shared honors as Great Northwest Athletic Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week.

The Ridgefield High School graduate tied for ninth at the Cal State Monterey Bay Otter Invitational out 99 golfers with an even-par 216. His round of 3-under 69 tied for the lowest of the first round.

A transfer from Oregon State, Johnson finished fall season with a 72.29 scoring average in 14 rounds. He shared the weekly Player of the Week honors with Simon Fraser’s Bret Thompson. Johnson is the first Vikings player to earn a GNAC Weekly honor this season.
