Vancouver police arrested a 26-year-old man Saturday afternoon following an assault incident that occurred in a vehicle, and then on foot, along Interstate 205.

Darrell D. Classen was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault, fourth-degree assault and reckless endangerment, according to a Vancouver Police Department news release. Information on Classen’s home town was not available.

Police from Vancouver and Portland were dispatched at about 3 p.m. to a “moving disturbance” in a vehicle that was northbound on I-205 from Portland. While police were on their way, the vehicle pulled over on I-205 northbound at the state Highway 14 exit. A woman ran from the vehicle and into lanes of traffic.

Other motorists who had observed the disturbance in the car stopped and attempted to help the woman. The man later identified as Classen began chasing her but was deterred by several people who’d stopped. One of them reportedly was slapped by the suspect.

The man then attempted to flee on foot and was held by several witnesses on the shoulder of the freeway until police arrived.

A very young child also was in the couple’s car, said Cpl. Duane Boynton, Vancouver police spokesman.
