A fire at a Parkway East house started in a chimney and spread to the attic, causing extensive damage, Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli said.

Crews from the Vancouver Fire Department were called to the house, 2805 N.E. 155th Ave., at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday for a working attic fire. Residents were home at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported.

The fire started in a garage chimney vent and then spread to the outside wall and into the attic space, Scarpelli said, causing an estimated $40,000 in damage.

The living space of the residence did not sustain any major fire damage, and the home was insured, Scarpelli said.

Scarpelli asked that residents make sure proper permits and inspections are secured prior to installation of fuel-burning appliances. She also advised people to burn only dry, nontreated wood and to clean chimneys on a regular basis.
