Sierra Club to honor local activist for his work

Environmental activist and Vancouver resident Don Steinke will receive a special achievement award from the Sierra Club this weekend, the organization announced.

Steinke will be recognized for his role in opposing proposed oil terminals in Vancouver and elsewhere, according to the San Francisco-based environmental group. Steinke is among a slate of honorees who will receive awards as part of a Sierra Club ceremony on Saturday in San Francisco.

A proposal to build the nation’s largest oil-by-rail facility at the Port of Vancouver has made the city a focal point in the debate over fossil fuels and oil transport. Steinke and other activists have vocally opposed the plan and other oil-by-rail facilities in the Northwest.
