Letter: A raise is asking too much

Regarding the proposed pay raises for the city of Vancouver’s mayor and councilors, I have two comments to make.

Why does the salary commission think the mayor and councilors are worthy of a pay raise when, as reported, their pay is already 63 percent above average for mayors and 23 percent above average for councilors in other comparable cities in the state of Washington?

Most raises are given to people who deserve them because of accomplishments. Our city has potholes in roads, weeds galore in medians and open spaces, and trash on the side of the road, etc.

When contemplating an enormous raise, how can they have the audacity to ask the taxpayers to have their taxes raised to assist the homeless with housing needs? Perhaps they can donate a portion of their increased paycheck for this cause.

Has our political system run awry, not only nationally, but locally?
