GREENBELT, Md. — Police in Maryland say an officer fatally shot a man who fired at police from the balcony of a third-floor apartment.
Greenbelt Police spokesman George Mathews said that officers were called to an apartment complex Monday night for a report of a person firing a gun.
When officers arrived, Mathews says the man went to a third-floor apartment and fired at them from a balcony. He says an officer fired one shot, striking the man, who continued firing intermittently. A tactical unit went into the apartment and took the 28-year-old Greenbelt man into custody. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
Mathews says the man was black, but police aren’t yet releasing his name. He didn’t know whether the department would release the officer’s name or race.
