I understand the fear of having a person who appears to be the wrong sex in the wrong “biffy,” the embarrassment of inadvertently or intentionally going into the wrong “john,” and the fear of pedophiles.
However, before we dismiss the idea of non-sex “water closets” out of mind, consider this. The U.S. tends to be really uptight about “latrines.” If one has traveled oversees, it becomes obvious that the “dunny” can be co-ed. It really moves things along. Ladies, how many times have you waited in “that line”? Now you can use the men’s room “Jacks.” (After all, no one is checking what your “real” gender is.) Guys, it works for y ou, too. If the men’s is busy, just drop into the women’s “loo.”
For those afraid of the idea, understand the problem will quickly resolve itself. Women will be so happy to zip into the guys “privy” and guys will be so tired of waiting in line that we may go back to the original separation.
In fairness to everyone, wouldn’t it be easier and cheaper to take down the signs, add more stalls, some that include urinals (with a small discreet “U” on the door) and let one “go” where one will?
