Tiny house highlights grey area in Portland zoning laws

PORTLAND — A Portland couple has been forced out of their tiny home because of city ordinances that ban the structure because it sits on a wheeled frame.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reports that Claire Teasdale and Bennett Frazier had been living in a 200-square-foot home parked behind a duplex on land owned by Teasdale’s parents until a neighbor’s complaint triggered a city inspection. Because the tiny house is on wheels the city considers it a mobile home, meaning it is an illegal dwelling in areas zoned for single-family homes.

Teasdale, Frazier and other tiny-home enthusiasts are calling on incoming Mayor Ted Wheeler to amend the zoning code as tiny homes could be a solution to the city’s growing housing shortage.
