New scam targets tax professionals

Bellingham — The Washington state Department of Revenue is alerting tax professionals to an emerging phishing scam.

Officials said the scammer sends an email that pretends to be from a tax software company and tries to trick recipients into clicking a bogus link.

The link takes the intended victim to a website that prompts them to download a file that appears to be an update of the software. The file has the same name as the software, followed by “.exe extension.”

Instead of being an update, the program tracks key strokes, which is a common way for cyber thieves to steal login information and passwords, according to a Washington state Department of Revenue news release.
