Vancouver High star, Bob Dunn dies at 82

Multi-sport star played football at UW in 1950s

Bob Dunn, a Vancouver native who played quarterback for the Washington Huskies in 1957 before a distinguished coaching career, has died.

The longtime football coach at Olympia High School, Dunn died on Aug. 5 at a memory care facility in Olympia at the age of 82.

A multi-sport athlete who graduated from Vancouver High School in 1952, Dunn played football for the Huskies during the 1953, 1954 and 1957 seasons. According to his brother William Dunn of Vancouver, Bob Dunn was a running back, defensive back, placekicker and punter for the Huskies,

In 1957, Dunn played quarterback in Jim Owens’ first season as the Washington coach.

According to The Olympian newspaper, Dunn had a record of 136-76 in 22 seasons as Olympia’s football coach. He guided the Bears to the 1984 Washington Class 3A state championship. Prior to coaching Olympia, he coached in Riverside, Calif., and at Anacortes.

At Vancouver High School, Dunn played football, basketball, baseball and competed in track and field. He was a twice an all-state selection in football.
