Community notebook: CCYF food drive brings in a record

The eighth Titan Youth Foundation/Clark County Youth Football Food drive collected a record 100,011 pounds of food.

Of the 50 CCYF teams that participated, 21 teams collected more than 500 pounds of food and cash donations and all 50 teams donated to the total according to organizer Dylan Henry.

The top individual donors were Cole McClennen from the Tigers Grades 2-3 team and Marcus McGlatherly from the Falcons eighth-grade team.

“Their effort and contributions were truly extraordinary,” said Henry, who organized the food drive along with fellow a Union High School junior Keith Lobis.

The Tigers Grades 2-3 team led the way, collecting 6,072 pounds. The second-place team was the Falcons grades 4-5 team (3,319 pounds) and the Falcons eighth-graders (3,260 pounds). The top three teams earned golf for their coaches at Tri-Mountain Golf Course and Fairway Village and a massage for a team parent at Priority Health Chiropractic and Massage.

A record 11 CCYF teams collected more than 1,500 pounds of food and earned pizza parties at Pied Piper Pizza.

Graphic Packaging employees contributed 39,200 pounds in food and donations to the Titan Youth Foundation from their food drives. Among the business that contributed volunteers or prizes to the food drive were Hi-School Pharmacy, State Farm Insurance agent Julie Moe, Kristian DeGroot of Morgan Stanley, and Kohl’s. The Union High School Honor Society and Titans athletes also volunteered during the jamboree.

In addition, 4,000 pounds of food was collected during the Washington Timbers Summer Slam Soccer Tournament. Mountain View junior JT Correy and Union junior Owen Murphy staged that food drive for the second year.

CCRC summer runs continue

Jesse McChesney won the Aug. 24 Clark County Running Club race at Marine Park.

The 28-year-old from Vancouver finished the 3.1-mile course in 15 minutes and 47 seconds, which was 34 seconds ahead of runner-up Oscar Bauman, 43.

Katarina Mueller was the first female finisher. She was the eighth overall finisher in 19:49.

A total of 102 runners recorded times for the 5-kilometer race.

Results of the run are in the Community Sports Scoreboard.

The CCRC series of Wednesday races continues this week with a Tech Center 5K. The run starts at 6:30 p.m. Participants should park at Columbia Valley Elementary School, 17500 S.E. Sequoia Circle in east Vancouver.

B.G. Chamber hosts golf event

The Battle Ground Chamber of Commerce North County Golf Classic will take place on Sept. 15 at The Cedars on Salmon Creek. Registration for the 18-hole scramble tournament costs $90 for members of the Chamber of Commerce, $110 for others.

Run, Walk-n-Roll benefits UCP

The 12th Walk, Roll-n-Run, a benefit for United Cerebral Palsy of Oregon and Southwest Washington, takes pace on Sept. 17 on the Eastside Esplanade in Portland. This year the event includes an 8-kilometer run and a 5-kilometer run along with a 2.5-mile walk and roll for those in wheelchairs.

Cost is $25, $15 for ages 13-17 and free for those 12 and younger. To register or to learn more, visit walkrollnrun.org.
