From the start of 2015 through early July 2016, the Washington state secretary of state received 389 submissions for initiatives, both to the people and to our legislature. Now that submission deadlines are passed and signatures have been verified, six have qualified to show up on the Nov. 8 voters ballot.
Many voters first learn about initiatives when they appear in the voters’ pamphlet, and this is generally not a lot of information.
One of the six is Initiative 735, which will get Washington state on board with a growing national effort to overturn the Supreme Court decision known as “Citizens United.” This decision has resulted in a tsunami of dark political money — primarily from large corporations — engulfing our elections process, drowning out the financial support offered by individual voters. Corporations are not people, and money is not speech!
A champion of this national effort, David Cobb, co-founder of Move To Amend, will speak from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. today at the Clark County Genealogical Society Annex, 717 Grand Blvd., Vancouver, in support of Initiative I-735.
Cobb is an entertaining speaker. If you think this cause is important or if you need more information about Initiative I-735, this is the place to be this evening. This is a no-cost event.
