Michael Kors wants women to have fun

Designer’s fall line features furs, feathers and frivolity

NEW YORK — As models hit their stride down the runway at the fall 2016 Michael Kors show Wednesday morning, Motown played in the background and a distinctly 1960s pop-art frivolity floated into the room. Happy fashion!

Ostrich feathers sprouted from comfy indigo jeans; mink jackets were dyed baby blue and popped with white flowers; shirt dresses sparkled with tiny beaded flowers and giant-framed sunglasses called to mind the swinging ’60s.

None of this visual candy comes cheap. This was Kors’ flagship collection, not the more accessibly priced secondary line. But luxury — mink, cashmere, fox — doesn’t have to be serious. It doesn’t have to be quiet. It can be the centerpiece of a woman’s own little fashion party.

Starting with the sunglasses and ending with gold glitter pumps, the collection exuded fun and the personal pleasure to be found in a beautiful object.

It wasn’t fussy. A denim skirt is never stodgy but it suddenly becomes special, even deluxe, when covered in feathers. A silver sequin cocktail dress looks a bit less precious when paired with a gray hoodie. Handbags were the color of jelly beans. And the dullest business suit breaks free from its torpor when paired with shiny fringed loafers with a chunky heel.

No big socio-political gestures here. Just a simple plea: Smile. And then go shop.
