Offensive struggles caught up with the Papermakers as their season ended Saturday with the bi-district playoff loss in Sammamish.
After hurrying to an early 10-3 lead, Camas scored only 11 points over the middle two quarters. Still, the Papermakers were within two with less than six minutes to play before the Wolves pulled away and hit free throws to stretch the lead and secure their place in the Class 4A girls basketball state round-of-16.
Haley Hanson led Camas with 12 points. She hit a pair of early 3-pointers to help the Papermakers to the 10-3 lead.
The game was tied at 14-14 at halftime and Camas was within 29-27 with 5:48 to play.
“Both teams really struggled to score,” Camas coach Scott Preuninger said.
Preuninger said the Papermakers missed several opportunities to build a lead in the first half.
“It’s disappointing,” the coach said, noting that travel delays meant his team was on the bus for more than five hours on its way to the game. Police activity near Lakewood closed much of northbound Interstate 5 for most of the day on Saturday.
The game was pushed from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Camas arrived at Eastlake at 4:15 and was had to hurry to get ready, Preuninger said.
Cameron Edward and Sarah Priestley each scored 17 points for Eastlake (17-7).
Despite the way the season ended, Preuninger said it will be good experience for a squad that graduates only one senior to build upon. Camas finished 18-5, with three of those losses to a Skyview team that won on Saturday to advance to the Class 4A state round-of-16.
