KINGSTREE, S.C. — Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton says President Barack Obama should nominate a “true progressive” to succeed conservative Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.
Clinton’s comments came in response to White House officials telling the Associated Press that the president is considering the Nevada’s Republican governor, Brian Sandoval, as a potential Scalia replacement.
The conservative icon died earlier this month.
Campaigning in South Carolina ahead of that state’s Saturday Democratic primary, Clinton said she hopes Obama taps “a true progressive who will stand up for the values and interests of the people in this country.”
Obama is in a high-stakes political battle with Senate Republican leaders who have said they will not consider any nominee the president chooses.
Sandoval is a Republican, but supports abortion rights.
