Suppose that Congress responded to the homeless crisis by passing new legislation, and called it the Affordable Housing Act. “Obamabode” would require that middle income homeowners provide free lodging to the homeless. Homeowners who like their homes can keep them, but they must relocate to their attics and basements to make room for their new guests. The president hails the program as “a great humanitarian victory.”
Sadly, some would endorse this absurd mandate as fair and innovative. Curiously, the Affordable Care Act forces similar inequities on countless Americans, yet advocates praise it as a monumental success.
Why do supporters embrace such flawed policies?
• They enjoy inexpensive health care but are blissfully unaware, or honestly don’t care, that soaring premiums are bankrupting many families.
• They faithfully accept government and media reports extolling the virtues of Obamacare, and therefore consider valid criticism to be lies.
