Girls basketball: Prairie 55, Columbia River 33

A 14-0 third quarter propelled the host Falcons to the win in the Class 3A Greater St. Helens League opener for both teams.

Natalie Whitesal scored a game-high 14 points for Prairie, which hit 10 3-pointers in the game compared with only one for Columbia River.

The Falcons (9-3, 1-0) led 30-20 at halftime, then pulled away in the third quarter. Prairie coach Brett Johnson said his team improved its intensity in the third period.

Cherita Daugherty had seven assists and seven rebounds for the Falcons. Kris Rocci grabbed eight rebounds and Grace Prom made three steals.

Columbia River coach Carl Click said he was pleased with his team’s effort, particuarly in defending some of the Falcons’ top scorers. Click also said his team did a good job of handling Prairie’s defensive pressure for much of the night. He said that River played better than the scoreless third quarter indicated, but just didn’t hit any shots.

Kate Kraft grabbed nine rebounds for River.
