SEATTLE (AP) — The boyfriend of a woman whose 2-year-old son shot himself in the face at a Seattle motel has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.

KCPQ-TV reports that police say the boy had emergency surgery Monday and is expected to survive.

Francois Cunningham was charged in the case Tuesday and is being held on $150,000 bail.

Court documents say 56-year-old Cunningham and the child’s mother had brought the boy to the hospital Monday morning and told police the child was injured in the motel room.

An investigation determined that the toddler had gotten hold of the gun and accidentally shot himself while the two were sleeping.

Police say Cunningham and his girlfriend were cooperative with investigators.

Cunningham’s arraignment has been set for July 25.
