UCLA freshman and Lake Oswego High grad Cole Madey had the best round of the day, shooting a 4-under-par 68 to take a one shot lead at the Royal Oaks Invitational on Saturday in Vancouver.

Madey leads last year’s runner-up Kevin Beavers, a Skyview High grad, who had a 1-under 71 second round.

Madey sank four birdies in a row on holes 13-16 to reach 4-under-par, but finished with a bogey on the 392-yard par-4 18th. He had seven birdies in his round.

First-round leader Brett Johnson lost ground with a 4-over 76 and is in a group of nine players tied for seventh at even par. That group also includes 2014 champion Jesse Heinly, and two-time Class 3A Washington high school champion Spencer Tibbits of Fort Vancouver.

Defending champion Nigel Lett is in the thick of things, posting a 71 and is tied for third at 1-under with Erik Hanson, Riley Elmes and Kasey Young.

The tournament concludes Sunday.
