Line of D.C.-themed nail polish has odd shade names

What color is Washington? Ask nail polish line OPI, which on Wednesday debuted its D.C.-themed collection of punnily named lacquer hues in collaboration with Kerry Washington.

Washington debuted a dark red color, “We the Female,” at Monday night’s Met Gala in New York.

Some of the 15 shades bear straightforward references to Beltway institutions, such as “Pale to the Chief” or “Freedom of Peach.” Others, though, are … well, more of a reach.

“Never a Dulles Moment,” for example. Washington insiders flying out of Dulles? They’d rather break a nail. And”Yank my Noodle” is supposed to be a play on the patriotic ditty “Yankee Doodle,” but it just doesn’t sound workplace appropriate.

Some of the best puns grace the names of the three special-edition Kerry Washington shades: “Kerry Blossom,” “‘Liv’ in the Gray,” a tribute to Washington’s character, Olivia “Liv” Pope on the ABC political drama “Scandal,” and “Inside the ISABELLEtway,” after Washington’s daughter.

The selection hits shelves Aug. 4.
