Lacey plans e-commerce zone in lot at City Hall

The city of Lacey is working toward creating a safe e-commerce zone in its City Hall parking lot for those who buy and sell online.

The idea came to light during Thursday night’s Lacey City Council meeting after Mayor Andy Ryder mentioned it as part of a general government committee report.

“More and more people are using the Internet to buy things,” he said, adding that the inspiration for the idea came from his son. There really isn’t a safe place to meet a stranger when you buy things online, Ryder recalled his son telling him.

The Lacey Police Department also was looking into the idea after Chief Dusty Pierpoint received a photo from one of his police officers. The photo shows a sign that marks an “Internet purchase exchange location” in the city of Sedro-Woolley.

Lacey plans to create a similar sign, as well as add more video cameras to monitor transactions.
