A mother and daughter were displaced Thursday after a faulty dryer caused a fire in a Battle Ground apartment, fire officials said.

Four engines carrying 11 firefighters from Clark County Fire District 3 responded to the blaze, reported at 9 a.m. at the complex, 318 S.W. 15th Ave., Battalion Chief Dave O’Brien said.

Residents had evacuated and the sprinklers had activated, putting out much of the flames in the laundry area.

Arriving crews doused the smoldering fire and rescued a cat in the area, O’Brien said. Firefighters remained on scene to help mop up the water that seeped into the floors, O’Brien said.

Though there was extensive damage from the water, a majority of the residents’ belongings were saved and no injuries were reported, O’Brien said.

A preliminary investigation by the Clark County Fire Marshall’s Office shows a possibly faulty dryer caused the blaze.

Clark County Fire & Rescue assisted at the scene.
