Spotlight on Youth

ART SHOW AWARDS

Students from Southwest Washington high schools were recognized for their art entries on March 15 at the 2015 Southwest Washington Regional High School Art Show, sponsored by Educational Service District 112. There were 267 entries submitted from a six-county region. The students’ art is on display through March 31 at ESD 112, 2500 N.E. 65th Ave., Vancouver. The regional winners’ art will advance to the state competition next month in Olympia. Following are the students from Clark County who were honored:

Regional awards: Mariah McDonald, Fort Vancouver High School; Linda Fortner, Heritage High School; Quinn Beatty, Justine Choi and Sara Litt, Mountain View High School; Christine Avdeyer and Lindsey Stockton, Prairie High School; Rebecca Phillips and Jake Thompson, Union High School; Natalie Farness, Evan Howard, Maria Schaljo and Cassi Williams, Vancouver School of Arts & Academics.

ESD 112 awards: Madeline Pavia, Camas High School; Derek Phan, HeLa High School; Alex Charley, Heritage High School; Preston Danberg, King’s Way Christian High School; Madeleine Newton, Vancouver School of Arts & Academics; Bailey Morris, Rebecca Phillips and Jake Thompson, Union High School.

Honorable mention: Anna Roche, Camas High School; Nick Bakh, Heritage High School; Annika Noreus, Hockinson High School; Justine Choi, Kaitlin Hyland, Jory Smith, Deborah Yang and Mary Yang, Mountain View High School.

Central Washington University scholarships: Nick Bakh, Heritage High School; Zoie Bryant; Rosalie Mayfield, Ridgefield High School.

Oregon College of Art and Craft scholarship: Nick Bakh, Heritage High School.

PORTLAND ROSE FESTIVAL COURT

Emily Jayne, a senior at St. Mary’s Academy in Portland, was the first princess named for the 2016 Rose Festival court. The court, made up of 15 women from local schools, will visit hospitals, senior and youth centers, and participate in community events in May. They’ll receive one-on-one mentoring from top female executives, and receive scholarships from The Randall Group. The Rose Festival queen will be chosen and crowned at the Queen’s Coronation on June 11 at Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

At St. Mary’s, Emily is on the volleyball and varsity track teams. She’s the founder of the school’s Student Health Club, and participates in Mock Trial, Model United Nations, and she serves on various school fundraising committees.

Emily is the daughter of Greg Jayne and Mary Patricia Lopez Jayne of Vancouver.

VANCOUVER USA SINGERS SCHOLARSHIP

Sunday Manisto-Saari, a junior at Mountain View High School, performed “Disneyland” from the musical “Smile,” before a panel of judges, and was awarded a scholarship from the Vancouver USA Singers.

Sunday is the daughter of Steven Saari and Christie Manisto.
