Braden Heaps won the battle at the plate and the Prairie baseball team gets another game.
Heaps’ bases-loaded single scored Greg Bernash in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday as Prairie defeated Capital 4-3 in a loser-out game of the 3A bi-district tournament at Kent.
Bernash had doubled to lead off the inning, and then Capital intentionally walked the next two Prairie batters to bring up Heaps.
Heaps fouled off six pitches and singled on the 10th pitch of his at-bat.
Prairie lost to Kennedy 13-0 in its first game Saturday to fall into the must-win situation.
And the Falcons found themselves down 2-0 after the first inning to Capital.
It wasn’t until Alec Gawley’s double in the fifth inning that produced Prairie’s first run of the day.
Cory Bryan’s double in the sixth inning tied the game at 2-2, and then Bernash scored the go-ahead run on a double steal.
Capital (12-9) then tied the game at 3-3 with a run in the top of the seventh.
Prairie (9-11) will face Auburn Mountainview at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Auburn in another loser-out game. The Falcons would need to beat Auburn Mountainview and then win one more game next Saturday to earn a 3A state playoff berth.
