Letter: This is not a mandate

Approximately 25.5 percent of the U.S. electorate voted for Donald Trump, 25.6 percent voted for Hillary Clinton, 2 percent voted for a third-party candidate, and almost 45 percent of eligible voters did not vote. This is not a mandate.

The office of the presidency should be a respected institution. However, the person in the office must earn respect from their constituents while in that office. With the campaign Trump ran of vulgarity, lying, hate, sexism, racism and narcissism, how can he build an inclusive new America? Does he really care to? I have watched Trump, over the last 35 years, behave only with self-interest.

I am convinced this is the lowest point in presidential history in my lifetime. Clinton and Obama were gracious and said to give him his chance. I can only be benevolent and try and do that.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
