PHILOMATH, Ore. — An Oregon school board has voted to resume its football program despite hazing accusations that depleted team membership.
The Corvallis Gazette-Times reports that the Philomath School Board voted Thursday night to reinstate football activities immediately. The future of the team’s 2016 seasons, however, is unclear.
Board members say they are concerned that there may not be enough eligible players available to finish out the season. Officials say they will ask the interim coaching staff to make a recommendation on whether the team should limit itself to junior varsity competition.
Six varsity players ages 15 to 17 have been cited with the juvenile equivalent of harassment and assault charges and the team’s assistant coach is facing a criminal mistreatment charge.
