A transient man accused of chasing another man with a knife in the Esther Short neighborhood made a first appearance Thursday in Clark County Superior Court.

Timothy J. Griffith, 22, appeared on suspicion of two counts of second-degree assault, court records show, stemming from a Saturday night altercation outside Share House, the men’s homeless shelter at West 13th Street and Lincoln Avenue.

According to a probable cause affidavit, an employee at Share House saw Griffith chasing Jermaine Campbell with a knife shortly after 9 p.m. in the 1300 block of Lincoln Avenue, following a disturbance outside the shelter.

An employee at Lincoln Place also told police she saw Griffith chasing Campbell and that they ran into the foyer of Lincoln Place. She said Griffith walked toward Campbell with the knife out in front of him and that Campbell looked terrified and yelled at her to let him inside the building, the affidavit states. She said the incident was recorded.

In an interview, Campbell told police that Griffith had pulled out a large knife with an 8-inch blade and chased him from the south side of the Share House to the foyer of Lincoln Place. Once inside the building, court records show, Griffith said he was going to kill Campbell and approached him with the knife out in front. Campbell said he thought Griffith was going to stab him, court documents state.

During Griffith’s court appearance, Judge David Gregerson appointed Griffith an attorney and set his bail at $40,000. He will be arraigned Sept. 22.
