KELSO — A 45-year-old man has died in a blaze that destroyed a home in Kelso Friday.

Cowlitz 2 Fire & Rescue says a woman managed to escape the fire that broke out just before 3 a.m. but firefighters later found the man dead in his room. The woman was taken to a local hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The department says the woman was awake and waiting for a carpool ride to work when she heard the smoke alarm go off. She went downstairs to check on her friend but found heavy smoke. She tried to alert him but was overcome by smoke and left the two-story house.

Fire crews from several agencies responded to the blaze. The cause is under investigation.
