The Vancouver Police Activities League starts its monthly literacy events with 10 a.m. Thursday at Hockinson Heights Elementary School.

On Tuesday, the activities league will hold another event at Martin Luther King Elementary School, starting at 10 a.m.
The events provide free books to kids and are designed to encourage reading and create positive connections between kids and cops.

The events include safety presentation from the Vancouver Police Department or Clark County Sheriff’s Office, a chance for kids to pick out a free book, reading time with officers and tours of police vehicles.

This year, the organization is focusing on youth in second and third grade.
