Weather Eye: Batten down hatches, rare April windstorm may be on its way

Let’s do the rants and raves first. So much for a dry Tuesday as promised. The day started out not bad but rain showers began late afternoon into the evening. The clouds and rain also stopped the high temperature at 60 degrees. Remember what I was saying Tuesday about we cannot get more than a day without rain? The Sunday and Monday event is the only gold star on my calendar.

In all my years in the weather business, I can’t remember a winter and early spring like this one. And to top it off, the National Weather Service issued a special weather statement for Friday. What is so special about it? A possible rare April windstorm along the coast and perhaps locally. As of Wednesday afternoon it was looking like winds locally may reach 30 mph to 40 mph; at the ocean beaches maybe 50 to 60 mph. The forecast will be updated during the day today.

Meanwhile, more rain is in the forecast. The unsettled weather continues all next week. I feel sorry for the kids on spring break this week as far as the outside conditions. But hey, we just make the best of it, don’t we? What’s a little rain to stop activities?

It rained most of the day Wednesday at the coast, with well over an inch of rain falling. There were a few breaks for a dash outside to the beach. But very brief. Astoria, Ore., had 1.35 inches as of 5 p.m. Wednesday. Same for our Long Beach Peninsula.

I have no offer of any extended warm and dry weather. OK, I’m off my soapbox and will not be climbing any trees and going out on a limb with my future forecasts.
