Washougal — Canyon Creek Middle School students raised nearly $1,600 in their Pennies for Patients: Bring the Change campaign, in which students and families brought in their spare change and larger donations in a competition between classes.

The school’s original goal was to raise $1,000, said Sammy Mederos, student body president, in a release from the district. The money will go to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and cancer research.

“We don’t always get the chance to help people in need, but our school showed how easy it is to empathize and give back,” Mederos said.
