Weather Eye: High temperatures forecast around area this week

We only had three days of 90 degrees or higher in July. July 5, July 22 and Monday at 91 degrees. The average mean temperature for the month was 69.4, only one degree above normal.

August is shaping up to be much worse. Wow.

High temperatures around the area of 100 degrees or better are forecast today through Friday. Perhaps we break the all-time high for both Vancouver and Portland this week.

If we get more than a subtle easterly breeze down the Columbia River, Vancouver’s high could be slightly cooler than forecast. Large wildfires in Canada are sending smoke southward into the U.S. If any of that high-level smoke comes our way, it may filter the sunshine a bit.

Anything over 100 is a scorcher. If it is 105 or 108, who could tell the difference? It will place a stress on every living thing. You may have to water your plants early morning and late evening. The power grid will be pushing the kilowatt usage to extremes.

We cool down this weekend into the 90s and I am hoping enough ocean air makes it up the river to cool us down into the 80s by next week.

I remember in my younger days living in Hazel Dell when we had a hot spell similar to this on August 7-10 1981 with four days 100 degree or higher, I would go outside and hose my swimming suit and then wear it to keep cool.

Do your best to keep cool and safe. We’ll chat Thursday.
