EVERETT — A Washington man has been charged with criminal mistreatment after his 81-year-old mother was found lying in filth with a broken hip and bound legs.

The Everett Herald reports 53-year-old Kenneth Strandt was charged Tuesday. He remains in Snohomish County Jail on $150,000 bail.

Strandt was arrested Friday after he called 911 to bring paramedics to the home he shares with his mother.

Authorities say she was found with bed sores and in clothing that was soiled with feces and urine. Court documents show a doctor characterized her injuries as life-threatening.

Strandt told detectives he works three fast food jobs, is tired all the time and struggles to provide care for his mother.

Public defender Pooja Vaddadi said the bail amount was excessive given Strandt has no serious criminal history.
