Letter: Helping is not a competition

After reading Lois Murphy’s letter on Dec. 8, “Many provide help for homeless,” regarding The Columbian’s “ample front-page space for photos and ink” on the weekly Frassati supper for the homeless at the Proto-Cathedral of St. James the Greater, I was very disheartened.

In addition to the supper there is also the Frassati cupboard handing out food and the Frassati closet, which distributes sleeping bags, blankets, coats, toiletries and more.

Murphy said “the effort seems to pale in comparison to other area churches and organizations responding to the needs of the large homeless population.”

I have never thought of helping the homeless as a competition, where we compare who is doing what and how much. I have always thought how fortunate we are to live in a community where so many churches, stores and organizations work together to ease the suffering of the poor.
