Regarding Cheryl Majeske’s Nov. 30 letter, “Make city clean, inviting,” I feel exactly the same way. I moved to Vancouver in July and noticed bottles, cans, wrappers, and bags on many sidewalks and roadsides. It appears there are not enough trash receptacles.
On occasional walks, I carry a bag and gloves to pick trash up. Once a car drove by and someone yelled out, “Thank you, you’re awesome!” It felt good briefly, as I knew I would be repeating this soon. Some children once asked why I was picking items up and then ran off. I wanted to tell them that it is their environment and also that animals may be hurt by bottles, cans, and plastic. Maybe we can plant a seed in young minds, especially those who aren’t handling litter responsibly.
