Police remind people about safe exchange zones for online transactions

With people turning to online ads for their Christmas shopping, county law enforcement agencies are reminding people they offer some of their parking lots as safe exchange zones, where people can meet to finish their online transactions.

A stranger from the internet with some cool item you want, the logic goes, is still a stranger from the internet, so why not cut out a few variables from the experience?

Property may not be dropped off or left unattended, and the safe exchange zones are meant for person-to-person transactions. Gun sales are prohibited, and police will not help facilitate any exchanges.

The Vancouver Police Department has made three of its parking lots safe exchange areas:

• Vancouver Police Administration building, 605 E. Evergreen Blvd.

• Vancouver Police West Precinct, 2800 N.E. Stapleton Road.

• Vancouver Police East Precinct, 512 S.E. 155th Ave.

The Clark County Sheriff’s Office also makes available the parking lot at its West Precinct office, 505 N.W. 179th St., west of the fairgrounds.
