Letter: Time to adjust state taxes

By Stephen Rice, Vancouver
Published: December 25, 2017, 6:00am

Is it time for an income tax for some Washington residents? I’m sure readers are thinking, “Why would we want an income tax?” Well, if Washington taxed income from work performed outside of the state, then people working in Oregon would have to pay tax to Washington, and that tax would be a credit on the Oregon nonresident form, thus taking money Washington residents now give to Oregon, and give it instead to Washington.

Every dollar that Washington would get in tax would reduce what Oregon got. Washington could use that tax revenue for our services. I am not sure Washington could only tax residents that work in other states, but it’s worth looking into.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
