Firefighters worked well into the evening to clean up after a Tuesday afternoon fire destroyed a boat at the Washougal marina.

Firefighters were first called to the marina near Washougal Waterfront Park around 3:45 p.m.

Camas-Washougal Fire Department Battalion Chief Allen Wolk said he arrived at the marina to find a large column of black smoke and raging fire coming from one of the docked boats, which was tied up near the Puffin Cafe.

Wolk said that the fire did not spread to the cafe or a nearby propane tank and remained confined to the roughly 30-foot boat.

About 12 crews arrived to help, he said, including a Vancouver Fire Department fire boat.

“We got the boat pretty much out, but we had it about halfway full of water so it started to sink a bit,” Wolk said.

Firefighters got approval from the U.S. Coast Guard and state Department of Ecology to pump out some of the water and were able to drag the boat up a boat ramp.

The boat was still smoldering after they pulled it out, Wolk said around 7 p.m., and firefighters then were still working to finally put the blaze to bed.

“Right now, it’s looking like we just about got it,” he said.

No injuries were reported.
