Letter: Painful lessons from football

I raised two sons who each grew to be more than 6 feet tall but were not “beefy.” They did not play football because I knew too many men who were in constant pain from old injuries sustained in high school or college football. I didn’t raise my sons to be in pain as adults. Their father did not push them to “be a man” and participate, either. I asked my elder son if he regretted not playing football in high school. He replied, “Not at all. I think football is boring. Once you’ve seen a couple of games, you’ve seen them all. And I wasn’t interested in getting hurt as you’d informed us could happen.” And that, mind you, was before we learned the dangers of concussions! I do support inclusive, accessible sports that can be enjoyed for a lifetime. What are you raising your sons for?
