Letter: Be like China, build a bridge

By Douglas Greene, VANCOUVER
Published: February 8, 2017, 6:00am

I recently read about the Beipanjiang Bridge in China, which opened last year. It is the highest bridge in the world, some 1,854 feet high. It was built in three years and cost $144 million. Now isn’t that about what the Columbia River Crossing spent, over the past 10 years, just studying the Interstate 5 Bridge crossing from Washington to Oregon? The Beipanjiang Bridge links the province of Guizhou and Yunnan in China.

Where is the leadership in the Northwest to determine how to replicate this engineering feat with a budget that does not require spending $3.5 billion? Just asking.
