Letter: Republicans need to stand up

Where are you, Republican Party? Can’t you do something to rein in the chaos in the White House? If you do nothing, you share the blame when things go wrong.

In the first 14 days of the new regime, it alienated many of our allies, starting with Mexico, then Australia, the EU, Germany, Belgium with its “hell hole” and Israel, then non-allies Iran (probably justifiable) and China, our major trading partner. No reaction to Russia of course, which is actively heating up Ukraine and could destabilize Europe. There are seven countries barred from the U.S. as a terrorist preventive, but missing from the list are the countries whose citizens perpetrated terrorist acts in this country.

Domestically, no one in the party is opposing the administration’s assault on citizen protections as it repeals regulations without thoughtful review. Doesn’t dumping coal mining debris into waterways poison the water? Won’t deregulating banks just make banks richer by taking from — you guessed it, I hope — you and me? And how is removing gun sale restrictions on the mentally ill going to make me safer?

“Alternative facts” and lies are the order of the day, and Republicans do nothing. As the majority party, you are responsible to make sure that sanity reigns before there is action. You were quite effective in obstructing President Obama, so I know it can be done.
