A 35-year-old Vancouver man has been arrested after a hit-and-run collision Saturday evening in Portland that killed a 24-year-old Portland man.

Fernando Cuevas Jr. of Vancouver has been booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of failure to perform the duties of a driver and recklessly endangering another person.

According to a statement from Portland police, East Precinct officers responded at 5:26 p.m. Saturday to a report that a pedestrian was struck by a driver on Southeast 122nd Avenue near Liebe Street.

Police found Hussain Ahmed Alhamzah of Portland lying in the street with critical injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital and later died.

Police report that Cuevas, driving northbound, crossed over the bike lane and struck Alhamzah as he exited his vehicle, but then Cuevas allegedly did not stop at the scene and continued traveling northbound on 122nd Avenue. Officers found the vehicle in the area of Southeast 140th Avenue and Holgate. Two people associated with the van were detained.

Southeast 122nd Avenue was closed in both directions from Raymond Street to Holgate Boulevard for several hours as the Traffic Division’s Major Crash Team conducted its investigation.
