PORTLAND — A pedestrian died in the hospital after he ran into a road in Southeast Portland and was hit by a drunk driver.

KATU-TV reports that the crash happened just before 10:30 p.m. Monday.

Police say a 23-year-old man ran into the road in front of a pickup truck being driven by Eric Oman.

The young man’s friends say he was acting “strange and paranoid” before the crash — something that police say showed “behavior consistent with either a mental health crisis or drug psychosis.”

His friends tried to hold him back, but he broke free and went into the road.

He was seriously injured in the crash and died at the hospital.

Police say 55-year-old Oman was later booked into the Multnomah County Jail for driving under the influence.
