A crew of volunteers helped Vancouver’s Land Bridge look its best for the summer Saturday, removing moss and painting the walkway.

A team of teenagers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints volunteered with Confluence, the nonprofit organization constructing public art installations, including the Land Bridge, across the Columbia River basin.

“Confluence connects people to place through art and education,” said Colin Fogarty, executive director of Confluence.

Moss grows in the crevices and crannies of the Land Bridge, and because the path is constructed of decomposed granite it’s too fragile to blast with a power washer. Crews have to remove the moss, repaint the path and benches and clean off some small spots of graffiti by hand.

“For us, it accomplishes our mission,” Fogarty said of Confluence’s relationship with volunteer groups. “When you’re helping to fix up the community resource like this, it gives you a deeper connection to the site itself.”
