Letter: Not at all a quieter Fourth

By Dean Osterman, CAMAS
Published: July 9, 2017, 6:00am

The July 6 Columbian headline read “All in all, a quieter Fourth.” It was not all quiet in Camas; it was the loudest Fourth in 20 years. For two nights, my house rocked with extreme warlike explosions that terrorized pets and wounded our ears.

Walking around the neighborhood, one can see the remembrance of the nights before on the streets, and piles of rocket tubes in boxes on the street curbs. One has to be vigilant to keep fires from being started. Additionally, one has to clean up the various fireworks debris in one’s yard.

For the same reasons that Vancouver placed a blanket ban on fireworks, Camas needs to take the same action. Keep alive the Fort Vancouver celebration and ban the sale of fireworks to people who have no respect for the auditory damage done with insane levels of fireworks in our Camas neighborhoods.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
