Letter: Travel ban misses its target

By Ross Montgomery, VANCOUVER

While President Trump supporters can accurately quote 8 U.S.C.§1182(f) as the authority relied upon in the issuance of the president’s revised travel ban (referencing Mark Paulin’s letter of May 31, “Travel ban is necessary”), they seem to be challenged by its meaning.

Any action by the president under this statute, which was enacted by Congress, must be based on a rational “finding” supported by facts. The Trump administration’s arguments to justify banning travel from six Muslim-majority nations could not comb-over the fact that in the past 40 years not one single fatal terrorist attack in the U.S. has been committed by a visitor, immigrant or refugee from those named countries.

The president should be doing more to keep us safe in real life instead of wasting time and resources fanning the flames of fear.
