In your June 2 story “Group rallies for action on early learning,” about a rally for expansion of preschools, Ridgefield School Superintendent Nathan McCann stated, “Too many children were beginning their school careers without any knowledge of how to be a student.” He was referring to readiness for kindergarten.
I am beyond my prime and old enough to remember when there was not a kindergarten in most school districts. When kindergarten classes started to become popular and grow they were deemed necessary to prepare children for school.
We need to prepare children to be children and interact with their peers before attending a structured school system. This is their parents’ responsibility in child rearing. Those carefree and uninhibited first four years of life are just as important as the next 13 structured years.
Is it really necessary to send our 4-year-old children to school or is there a hidden agenda?
