Letter: Residency laws in question

By Mark La Bar, WASHOUGAL

The June 20 Columbian editorial “In Our View — Live Here, Register Here” said that it is the law that residents pay the Washington vehicle registration fee, but that is not the law. The law says you must first establish residency, then you have 30 days to register. The law says that you establish residency by any of the following:

1) register to vote

2) receive state benefits

3) get any Washington state license at resident rates

4) receive in-state tuition fees

I understand, therefore, that you must establish residency before the 30-day countdown. Perhaps the law needs to be revised to deal with what determines residency.
