Letter: The poor aren’t rich

The new Republican health plan is a scam. People with low income or no income pay very little, if any, income taxes, so a tax credit offers them nothing! These people have no extra income to put into health savings accounts because every cent they make is spent for food, clothing, and shelter. Not buying an iPhone or a latte will make no difference in their ability to pay for insurance — or health care. So what will they do when they are ill? They will get sicker without treatment, go to the emergency room, and die sooner. The same is true for those on Medicare and Medicaid. When you barely eke out an existence, you have nothing, and tax credits and proposed health savings accounts are useless. These changes benefit only the insurance companies and the rich.

Statistics show that in 2015, the real per capita income for residents of Washington was $33,486. That includes everyone in King County as well as everyone else who has high-paying jobs. So imagine what the actual real income is for the rest of us.
