Letter: Felons already have done their time

By Klaus Vande Stouwe, Vancouver

It makes me laugh that people keep complaining about homeless people in the streets and yet we continually make it harder for felons to thrive after finishing their time.

Some of these people are felons who couldn’t make a life for themselves as they were shunned and unable to find work or housing. Felons aren’t even able to hold public office so how could we ever expect this problem to be solved if the leadership could never understand their plight?

If we want these problems to stop then we need to stop treating felons like second-class citizens and allow them all the same rights as everyone else. Why send them to prison as punishment for their crimes if we are just going to make their lives impossible when they get out?

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
